What this table measures
The Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) survey is the BLS program behind these numbers. BLS counts medical coders in SOC 29-2072, Medical Records Specialists, whose official definition ends with the words "Includes medical coders":
"Classify medical and healthcare concepts, including diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment, into the healthcare industry's numerical coding system. Includes medical coders."
O*NET OnLine (U.S. Department of Labor): 29-2072.00 Medical Records Specialists
O*NET's sample job titles for the occupation include Medical Coder, Medical Records Clerk and Health Information Technician, so the figures describe the whole group, not coders alone. The reference period is May 2025, and BLS released these estimates on May 15, 2026.
Highest and lowest paying states
By median annual wage, the five highest areas were District of Columbia ($72,040), Rhode Island ($63,960), Hawaii ($63,180), Washington ($62,270) and California ($61,810). The five lowest were Mississippi ($41,500), Arkansas ($41,740), Alabama ($43,810), Louisiana ($44,610) and Florida ($45,760). The national median was $51,140.
The table does not adjust for living costs, experience, credentials or the type of employer. BLS publishes breakdowns by industry, which the billing vs coding page uses for hospitals and physician offices.
Median, mean and percentiles
"The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less."
BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Medical Records Specialists (last modified August 27, 2026)
The mean is the average wage, and it can sit above or below the median. The 10th and 90th percentile columns show where the lowest-paid and the highest-paid tenth of workers begin: nationally, BLS says the lowest 10 percent earned less than $37,000 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $81,150. The same cut points are shown for each state. To turn any of these wages into a payback estimate for your training, use the training payback calculator.
