How Long Does It Take to Become a Medical Coder?
BLS describes the education path but gives no single training length. This planner turns your program's hours and your weekly study time into dates, then adds the exam timing rules AAPC and AHIMA publish.

What official sources say
The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the usual route into the occupation that includes medical coders:
"Medical records specialists typically need a postsecondary certificate to enter the occupation, although some qualify with a high school diploma."
BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Medical Records Specialists (last modified August 27, 2026)
BLS adds that community colleges and technical schools offer certificate and associate's degree programs, and that these programs typically include courses in medical terminology, health data requirements and standards, and classification and coding systems. It lists the typical entry-level education as a postsecondary nondegree award, with no related work experience and no on-the-job training needed.
AAPC, which issues the CPC, makes one statement about time on its CPC page:
"Most people complete the coursework and pass the exam in 4 to 8 months."
AAPC, CPC page
That is AAPC's own statement, not a BLS figure. The AHIMA CCA and CCS pages do not state a typical duration. AHIMA requires a high school diploma for the CCA and recommends, without requiring, 6 months of coding experience directly applying codes or a completed coding program.
Weeks of coursework at different paces
Coursework weeks are program hours divided by study hours per week. The program sizes below are hypothetical inputs, not lengths of real programs.
| Program size | 5 hours a week | 10 hours a week | 15 hours a week | 20 hours a week |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 hours | 40.0 weeks | 20.0 weeks | 13.3 weeks | 10.0 weeks |
| 400 hours | 80.0 weeks | 40.0 weeks | 26.7 weeks | 20.0 weeks |
| 600 hours | 120.0 weeks | 60.0 weeks | 40.0 weeks | 30.0 weeks |
| 800 hours | 160.0 weeks | 80.0 weeks | 53.3 weeks | 40.0 weeks |
Exam timing rules the planner adds
CPC (AAPC)
"Do note that you must register three weeks prior to the exam date."
AAPC, CPC page
"To ensure accuracy and the quality of the exam, results will be available within 7-10 business days of completing the exam."
AAPC, CPC page
If you pass without two years of coding experience, AAPC attaches an "A" for apprentice to the credential (CPC-A).
CCA and CCS (AHIMA)
"Schedule the exam with Pearson Vue within 120-days of eligibility."
AHIMA, CCA page
AHIMA gives two hours for the CCA and four hours for the CCS. Candidates who do not pass must wait at least 30 days before a new application is approved. The planner shows the 120-day window from the day your coursework ends, which matches the rule only if your eligibility starts that day.
How the planner calculates
Business days for AAPC results count Monday to Friday and do not skip holidays. For costs, use the certification cost calculator or the training payback calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get a medical coding certification?
BLS does not give a single training length. AAPC states that most people complete the coursework and pass the exam in 4 to 8 months. The AHIMA pages state no duration; AHIMA requires a high school diploma for the CCA and recommends experience or training for its exams. Use the planner with your own program hours.
Do you need a degree to become a medical coder?
BLS says medical records specialists typically need a postsecondary certificate to enter the occupation, although some qualify with a high school diploma, and others might need an associate's degree. BLS lists the typical entry-level education as a postsecondary nondegree award.
How long are the CCA and CCS exams?
AHIMA gives CCA candidates two hours for 105 questions and CCS candidates four hours for 107 questions. Both have a passing score of 300.
How soon can you retake a coding exam?
AHIMA requires candidates who did not pass the CCA or CCS to wait at least 30 days before a new application is approved, and the retake fee equals the exam fee. AAPC sells CPC vouchers with 1 or 2 attempts.
How long does a CPC certification last?
AAPC's CPC page says that to maintain the credential you must maintain your AAPC annual membership and earn 36 CEUs every two years. AHIMA credentials run on two-year recertification cycles.
What does CPC-A mean?
AAPC attaches an "A" for apprentice to the credential (CPC-A) if you pass the CPC exam without two years of coding experience.
