Online Medical Coding Training: Cost and Payback Calculator

Official BLS wages, AAPC and AHIMA exam fees, and your own training price in one calculation.

Training payback calculator

From your school's quote. This site does not estimate it.

This calculator is for people comparing online medical coding training programs. It does not rank schools or sell courses. It puts three numbers side by side: what medical records specialists, the occupation that includes medical coders, earn in your state according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics; what AAPC and AHIMA charge for the CPC, CCA and CCS exams and memberships; and the price of your program, which you enter yourself. The result shows how many months of gross pay would cover the upfront cost.

Data as of May 2025 (BLS OEWS, released May 15, 2026). Fees checked October 5, 2026.

Worked example

Example inputs, not a price quote: a training price of $3,000, the CPC voucher with 2 attempts at $499, no membership, and the BLS median wage. The upfront cost is $3,499. The last column assumes a current pay of $36,000 a year and counts only the raise.

Months of pay needed to cover $3,499 (BLS median wage, May 2025)
AreaMedian annual wageGross monthly payMonths of payMonths of raise over $36,000
United States$51,140$4,2620.82.8
California$61,810$5,1510.71.6
Texas$48,860$4,0720.93.3
Florida$45,760$3,8130.94.3
New York$61,720$5,1430.71.6
Alabama$43,810$3,6511.05.4

How it works

Upfront cost = training price + exam fee + first-year membership Monthly gross pay = BLS annual wage / 12 Payback (months) = upfront cost / monthly gross pay Payback on a raise (months) = upfront cost / ((BLS annual wage - current annual pay) / 12) Work hours = upfront cost / BLS hourly wage at the same wage level

The payback formula is the standard simple payback period. The U.S. EPA cost manual describes it this way:

"If net annual revenues are the same every year, the revenue can simply be divided into the total capital investment to calculate the payback period."

U.S. EPA Air Pollution Control Cost Manual, Section 1 Chapter 2 (payback period)

Here the "revenue" is gross pay, counted per month. Wages are the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) estimates for May 2025, published on May 15, 2026. BLS defines them as straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay, and the survey does not include the self-employed. The calculator therefore shows months of gross pay, not take-home pay, and it ignores pay you may give up while you study.

Certification fees used

Published fees, checked October 5, 2026
ItemFee
CPC exam (AAPC core exam), 1 attempt / 2 attempts$425 / $499

Frequently asked questions

How much does medical coding training cost?

Program prices are set by each school, so this site does not publish or estimate them. AAPC notes that additional expenses vary with the coursework, books and practice exams you choose. The certification fees are published: AAPC lists its core exams, which include the CPC, at $425 for 1 attempt or $499 for 2 attempts, and AHIMA lists the CCA exam at $199 for members and $299 for non-members and the CCS exam at $299 and $399. Enter your program price in the calculator to add it.

How long does online medical coding training take?

BLS says medical records specialists typically need a postsecondary certificate to enter the occupation, although some qualify with a high school diploma. AAPC states that most people complete the coursework and pass the exam in 4 to 8 months. Program length is set by each school; the timeline planner turns your own program hours into dates.

How much do medical coders make?

BLS reports a median annual wage of $51,140 ($24.59 per hour) for medical records specialists in May 2025, the occupation that includes medical coders. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $37,000 and the highest 10 percent more than $81,150. See the salary by state table for every state.

Do you need a certification to work in medical coding?

BLS says certification may be required or preferred, and that employers may prefer to hire medical records specialists who have certification, or may expect applicants to earn certification shortly after being hired.

Can I take the CPC, CCA or CCS exam online?

AAPC lets CPC candidates take the exam online at home with a live remote proctor or at a testing center. AHIMA says its CCA and CCS exams are given in a computer-based format and must be scheduled at a Pearson VUE testing center.

What is the difference between CPC, CCA and CCS?

The CPC is issued by AAPC; the CCA and CCS are issued by AHIMA. AHIMA requires a high school diploma for the CCA and recommends, but does not require, coding experience or training for both of its exams. AHIMA describes the CCS as a natural progression for professionals experienced in coding inpatient and outpatient records, or those with a CCA. The certification cost comparison lists fees and rules side by side.

What is the job outlook for medical coders?

BLS projects employment of medical records specialists to grow 8 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations, with about 14,000 openings each year on average. BLS also notes that wider use of AI tools in medical coding may affect demand. More on the job outlook page.
